HISTORY
The Past &
Present
Recognized
statewide for more than two decades of exemplary programming, Maui
Youth and Family Services was founded in 1978 by the County of Maui.
Incorporated as the Maunaolu Youth Shelter, its doors first opened
to provide a haven for Maui ’s homeless, abused, and runaway
children. In response to its expanded role, the agency was renamed
to reflect the true scope of its work.
Since that time Maui Youth
and Family Services, Inc. (MYFS) has grown to provide innovative,
essential youth and family services to meet the expanding needs of

The MYFS board and staff instituted these programs in response
to the needs of the community as declared in community forums,
planning and research documents, and youth outreach projects. From a
modest beginning as a residential shelter, to its current status as
a major resource for intervention and rehabilitation for our
families in need, MYFS has grown and built a reputation for
professionalism, efficiency and effectiveness.
Its broad spectrum of activities embraces youngsters and
families, while addressing all types of needs related to their
physical safety, personal growth, and mental and emotional
stability. Beyond its own programs, MYFS cooperates to form a strong
network of interrelated services.
While physically located in Maui
County, its doors remain open to those in need from throughout the
state. MYFS is licensed by the Department of Human Services as a
child placement organization, and by the Department of Health as
special treatment facilities. Its substance abuse treatment
programs have accreditation with the Alcohol and Drug Abuse
Division. MYFS is fully accredited by the Council on Accreditation
for Children and Family Services. A member of the Maui Community
Children ’s Council, the Maui Non Profit Directors, the Maui,
Molokai, Lanai Providers Network, the Tobacco Free Partnership and
other interagency groups, MYFS links with numerous organizations on
Maui to plan for and provide needed services to children, adolescents,
and families.
